Becoming A Trusted Voice at United Nations Side Events: The Financial Inclusion to Empower Women in Humanitarian Contexts, Including Survivors of Sexual Violence in Conflict

This United Nations event co-hosted by Hungary, and moderated by Jacqueline Isaac, was able to draw on the experiences of girls who have survived sexual violence in conflict from Iraq, Syria, Congo, and other conflict-stricken countries.  Jacqueline relayed the heartbreaking, harrowing story of a young woman, Rita who was “exchanged” for sexual violence four separate times as a part of ISIS’ attempt to destroy her Christian community. UN Permanent Representatives of Iraq and Hungary denounced the stigma facing survivors and advocated for tangible economic support, social reintegration and meaningful justice.

ROS knows nothing is more powerful than a survivor’s voice.

We participate in these events not to be the conduit for survivors’ experiences, but to give them a platform and shine a spotlight on them to be heard. Survivors’ autonomy is the cornerstone and the driving principle behind all our work.
